NEW WEBSITE UP & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New Year Friends!

What an amazing year 2011 was. For me it was festivals, solo shows, TV debuts on Spicks and Specks and ROCKWIZ and oversea's travel and touring - phew I can't believe I made it out the otherside still smiling! (ha) One of my New Years Resolutions was to be more active with technology and learn how to keep in touch with the people who support me and keep me doin what I'm doin….so here it is...this is what has been going on in Flanoland.

The band and I finished up touring my solo album NIRVANA NIGHTS at the end of April after our appearance at the Byron Bay Bluesfest where were lucky enough to have, ahem, Bob Dylan to open for us on the Monday night. (Actually we were on stage as he was finishing and thought nobody would even come to our show, but we were pretty fortunate to have a good crew come down and support us and halfway through our set, it was a full tent! Hooray!)

After the festival and tour I went into hiding to finish off writing my show for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, MIDNIGHT MUSES (a collaboration between myself and poet Sam Wagan Watson), and emerged in June to perform my first "show" to wonderful audiences each night! If you click HERE you can see the promo video that Tim from Daylight Breaks put together for me and have an idea of what the show was about.

I spent two weeks in July dedicated to working on a project for the QLD Music Festival called SONGTRAILS alongside Rebecca Barnard, Peter Farnarn and Australian Music legend Robert Forster. I got to travel from Cairns to Brisbane performing and taking part in workshops in areas of QLD that were dramatically affected by cyclones and flooding. It was such a wonderful tour and the people that I met along the way were so inspiring and made us Songtrailers so welcome in their communities. So thank you guys, I hope I get to see you again!

The day after SONGTRAILS finished, I got on a big jet plane and flew to Canada to start the adventure of touring from Calgary all the way across to Montreal. We played big shows, little shows, festivals and parties and managed to meet some amazing people that we now call friends. Big shout outs to Pete, Jess, Richie, Kim, Liv, Dawn, John, Randal, Mayor Matt Allen, Corndog, Robyn, Colin, Kristen, Kathy, Cathy, Krista, Sheila and last but not least dearest Emily.

I had a bit of a break after Canada and went to my grandfathers country of Italy and spent a month learning what it was like to be Italian and speak my language for the first time. The photo above was taken in Venezia, the most beautiful place my eyes have ever seen. I just want to take the time to say, graze Atillio e Vincenzo per la loro gentilezza - I hope I got it right.

On my return back to Australia I headed to the Queenscliff Music Festival and performed 5 shows with my gorgeous band Matty Earl, Dylan Hartas, Brian Manning and Tom Jones. The shows were wonderful and the crowds were fantastic. The bluestrain was definitely a highlight.

Now I am back in my home of Darwin, sweating my guts out in this heat. Writing songs, playing low key shows at Nirvana, Dinah's and Noonamah and learning music for my next project……which is……ba dada da da da daaaaah........

MASS by Leondard Bernstein for the Adelaide Festival. Yep that's right, I am getting back to my classical roots and performing along with over 150 other performers for an EPIC show which includes a Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, a fricken HUGE Chorale and a gospel singer from the US. So yeah, I am currently at home in lock down mode and trying to learn my parts before I head into one of the most challenging gigs I have taken on in a long time. Mind you, releasing an Independent record is always pretty up there in the super challenging category…haha..

Well I think thats enough ranting and rambling from me....don't forget to check out my fancy new website, complete with new photos by Julia Gray and Renee Lalor. I got gig details up, new shiny things to look at and some HUGE plans in the pipeline coming up...so stay tuned...

Much love to you crazy cunards and hopefully I'll be seeing you at some point this year...

Ciao ciao,

Leah Flanagan
